Matthew Sylvester has an extensive and diverse background in the field of education, spanning from K-12 to higher education.
Matthew's passion for teaching and learning is evident in his considerable experience, which includes instructing English literature and composition courses in public high schools (grades 9-12) located in New Jersey, Florida, and Georgia. From 2018 through 2022, he also took on the responsibility of teaching freshman writing to undergraduates, imparting his knowledge and skills to the next generation of scholars. Furthermore, he has played a role in the development of future educators by supervising pre-service secondary teacher interns in their clinical placements.
Beyond his teaching roles, Matthew has a professional history in student services within higher education. His contributions include serving as an Admission Recruiter, catering to both high school students and transfer applicants at Middle Georgia State University. He also supported students' development as an Academic Advisor (Teacher Education). Matthew has demonstrated his commitment to educational access and opportunity by serving on the leadership team for Enrollment Services at Valencia College as an Assistant Director.
Matthew's academic qualifications are a testament to his dedication to the field of education. He holds a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction with experience using qualitative approaches to investigate complex problems of practice, including a specific focus in constructivist grounded theory methods. His research interests extend to the role of masculinity within the educational context and the influence of masculine beliefs on learner engagement and male literacy.
Complementing his Ed.D., Matthew holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Interdisciplinary Studies, where he specialized in English Literature and Reading Education. Additionally, he possesses a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Secondary Education, reflecting his commitment to the growth and development of students and educators alike.
